Dog-Friendly Sheffield: Pubs, Parks and Peak District

The classic Sheffield dog walk starts at Endcliffe Park – a broad, well-maintained Victorian park with a cafe, a stream, and enough open space for dogs of all sizes to operate at maximum capacity. From Endcliffe you can walk up through Whiteley Woods and continue to Forge Dam, a beautiful wooded valley with a cafe that welcomes dogs both outside and, on quieter days, inside. The walk takes around ninety minutes at a sensible pace, considerably longer if your dog finds the stream interesting.

Rivelin Valley Nature Reserve sits on the north-western edge of the city and is less visited than Endcliffe by the mainstream walking crowd, which makes it better. The valley follows the River Rivelin through ancient woodland, past a series of former mill dams, and out toward the moors. Off-lead throughout most of its length. Bring actual walking boots, not just trainers.

This bears repeating because it’s the central fact of dog ownership in Sheffield. Stanage Edge, the Derwent Valley, Padley Gorge, the Eastern Moors – all of these are accessible by car or even by bus in under thirty minutes. The Peak District is one of the greatest dog-walking areas in Europe and Sheffield people use it as a matter of routine.

The Fat Cat, The Gardeners Rest, The Broadfield, and The Lescar all welcome dogs without making a production of it. The city’s real ale pub culture is generally dog-friendly in the way that pub culture always used to be – there’s a bowl of water by the bar, nobody minds the pawprints, and the dog is treated as a normal part of the evening.
