Free Things to Do in Sheffield

Sheffield is genuinely free in ways most cities are not. Museums, galleries, parks and walking routes all without charge.

Sheffield’s free offer is exceptional for a major English city. The museums are free. The galleries are free. The parks are extraordinary. The walking routes from the city centre into the Peak District are world-class and cost nothing. This is not a coincidence – it reflects a city that has invested in public culture and public space as genuine priorities.

01 Free

Free Museums

Weston Park Museum, the Millennium Gallery, Graves Gallery and Kelham Island Museum are all free to enter. Between them they cover natural history, Sheffield industrial history, fine art and the city’s steel manufacturing heritage. A full day touring the free museums is a genuinely good day – not a compromise. The Kelham Island Museum in particular is one of the best industrial heritage museums in England.

02 Winter

The Winter Garden

The Winter Garden on Surrey Street is a vast temperate glasshouse in the city centre housing 2,500 plants. Free entry, all year round, with a cafe inside. On a grey Sheffield Tuesday afternoon it is a surprisingly transformative place to spend an hour. The adjacent Peace Gardens and the Town Hall steps are part of the same public space network that makes Sheffield city centre genuinely pleasant to move through.

03 Parks

Parks and Green Space

Sheffield has more trees per person than any other city in Europe (a fact the city mentions regularly and with reason). Endcliffe Park, Millhouses Park and Ecclesall Woods form a green corridor from the city centre towards the Peak District. Weston Park is ten minutes from the city centre and has a playground, open lawns and direct access to Weston Park Museum. All free. All excellent.

04 Sheffield

Sheffield Botanical Gardens

The Botanical Gardens in Broomhill were restored to their Victorian design with lottery funding. The glasshouses are free to enter. The formal gardens are beautifully maintained. The rose garden and woodland sections are particularly good in spring and summer. One of the least-talked-about free attractions in Sheffield and one of the best.

05 Walking

Walking From the City Centre

You can walk from Sheffield city centre to the Peak District National Park boundary in under an hour. The Porter Valley route through Endcliffe Park and onto Ecclesall Woods is the easiest. The Five Weirs Walk along the River Don is urban and industrial in a fascinating way. Both are free. Both are excellent.
