Best Sunday Roast in Sheffield

This is the benchmark. The Milestone on Manchester Road has been quietly doing the best roast in the city for years without shouting about it. The beef is local, the veg is seasonal, and the portion size assumes you’ve been on a walk in the Peak District beforehand (or intend to lie on the sofa afterwards – both are valid). They also do a vegan roast that doesn’t feel like an afterthought, which is rare.

A proper neighbourhood pub with a proper Sunday menu. The Graze Inn in Walkley is the kind of place where you’ll sit at a table that’s been in the same spot for thirty years and feel absolutely fine about that. Roasts change with the season. Yorkshires are non-negotiable. The pork crackling is the sort that makes you wonder why you ever order anything else.

The Fat Cat is Sheffield’s most-loved pub, full stop. It’s a CAMRA listed gem that’s been pouring real ale on Alma Street since 1981. The Sunday roast is unpretentious and generous – this is not a gastropub trying to charge you £20 for deconstructed lamb. It’s a pub roast done correctly, eaten at the bar or in the beer garden if the weather behaves, which it occasionally does.

Out on the edge of the city, closer to the Peak District than to the city centre, Old Harvesters is the Sunday roast reward for people who’ve done the Rivelin Valley walk first. The food is hearty, the setting is rural-ish, and the car park is full of muddy boots by noon. A carvery rather than a plated roast, but done with care and in generous quantities.

Sheffield’s Sunday roast culture is old and unpretentious. Nobody here is charging you £24 for a plated chicken with a smear of jus and calling it heritage. The city prefers its food honest, its portions substantial, and its Yorkshires structurally sound.
