Williams Coffee Merchant – Independent roaster-cafe, their own beans. Espresso-focused, quality variable depending on staff expertise but genuinely good machines and technique. Prices £2.50-4. They supply other cafes, so beans available for home use too.

Tamper Bakery and Coffee – The bakery location has a coffee element. Weaker than dedicated coffee focus but reliable. Probably worth visiting for the bread, coffee is secondary.

Proper grind (fresh, not pre-ground), correct water temperature (90-96C), consistent technique. Espresso should pull 25-30 seconds and taste balanced – not sour, not bitter. Milk should steam properly – froth that’s velvety, not thick foam. Most chain places fail on one or more of these – usually milk steaming and grind consistency.
