The Fat Cat | Sheffield

The Fat Cat at 23 Alma Street in Kelham Island is the home of Kelham Island Brewery and one of the pubs most closely associated with Sheffield’s real ale culture. The pub opened in 1981, shortly before the formation of Kelham Island Brewery in the yard behind it, and has maintained an unwavering commitment to cask ale quality for over forty years. The brewery, visible through windows at the rear of the building, produces Pale Rider, Easy Rider, and a range of seasonal ales that are served on the premises.

The physical character of the Fat Cat is that of a traditional industrial-district pub: two small rooms, a compact bar, no background music, and an atmosphere that prioritises the regulars who have been coming for decades alongside the visitors who make the pilgrimage specifically. The contrast with the newer bars that have colonised the surrounding area is intentional and maintained deliberately.

The beer selection extends beyond the house Kelham Island ales to include a rotating selection of guest ales from other independent breweries. The cask quality is consistently high. The pub also stocks a range of bottled Belgian and German beers for those who want something outside the cask range. Wine and spirits are available but the beer is the point.

Alma Street is in the heart of Kelham Island, around ten minutes’ walk from Sheffield city centre via the river. The surrounding area now includes the Kelham Island Museum, several new restaurants, and the Kelham Island Tavern on Russell Street. The Fat Cat predates all of this neighbourhood development and its presence is part of what made Kelham Island attractive to the newcomers.
