Record Junkee is City Centre vinyl bar where the records are not ironic and the cocktails are not secondary. Both things are taken seriously, which is why both things are good. The record collection is deep – organised by era and genre, curated because curation is work – and the DJs know what they’re playing and why.
The cocktails are mixed properly. They’re not designed just to be pretty; they’re designed to be balanced and worth drinking. The bartender knows what they’re doing because that’s the standard. Vinyl art on walls because vinyl is the thing. The lighting is right – low enough to feel intimate, bright enough to see what you’re drinking. The volume is set so you can talk and hear the music, which is rarer than it should be.
City Centre location means easy access, and the bar draws people who care about both records and cocktails. That intersection used to be uncommon; Record Junkee helped make it normal. The community that forms around the space is people who understand both things matter.
What matters is that Record Junkee didn’t have to choose between records and cocktails. By doing both properly, both became better. That’s how bars actually work – the elements support each other rather than compete.
