The Milestone – Sheffield

Sunday roasts done proper. If you're after the British thing - Yorkshire puddings, crackling, real gravy - this is where it's done right.

The Milestone is what gastropub is supposed to mean: a pub where the food matters but it doesn’t pretend to be something it isn’t. The Sunday roast is the thing everyone comes for, and rightly so because it’s genuinely good. Proper Yorkshire pudding – not those sad collapsed ones you get everywhere – beef that tastes like beef, crackling that actually cracks.

The meat is sourced properly. You can taste the difference. The vegetables are cooked so they still have texture. The gravy is proper gravy, made from actual stock, not the brown liquid most places serve. The horseradish comes on the side because you’re grown enough to mix your own condiments. Henderson’s Relish is available if you want it.

Weekday menu is solid British food without reaching. Fish and chips that work, pies that are filled with something recognisable, steaks done how you order them. It’s pub food that tastes like someone cared about cooking it, not that someone was told to cook it.

Kelham Island location means it gets the mix – locals, people from the studio spaces, people who travelled specifically for the roast. The room is proper pub, not designed, just what it is. The bar has good beer because Kelham Island has beer standards. They take bookings, which is smart because Sundays sell out in winter.

Sheffield needed more places that did traditional British food without apology or irony. The Milestone does that. It doesn’t try to be anything else, which is why it’s good at being what it is.
