Sheffield’s LGBTQ+ community is not defined by a single street or a cluster of venues. It runs across the city – from the recognised venues in the city centre and West End to community groups, creative spaces and a Pride event that has grown significantly over the last decade. This is a city where being queer is ordinary, which is the best possible version of things.
The Lescar, Hunters Bar
The Lescar on Sharrowvale Road is Sheffield’s longest-running LGBTQ+ pub and one of the best community pubs in the city by any measure. It is a quiet, unpretentious place with good beer, regular quiz nights, a folk club, and a welcome that is genuinely warm rather than performatively inclusive. It does not feel like an LGBTQ+ venue that is trying hard to be one. It feels like a very good pub that happens to be one.
Dempsey’s, Campo Lane
Dempsey’s has been Sheffield’s main LGBTQ+ bar in the city centre for decades. It is loud, unpretentious and popular with a cross-generational crowd that is not self-consciously trendy. The drag nights are regular. The music policy leans pop and commercial. The cocktails are priced reasonably. It is the kind of place that functions equally well for a first night out and a forty-fifth.
Rockingham, Rockingham Street
Rockingham has developed a strong queer following and hosts regular LGBTQ+ nights. It sits in the cocktail bar bracket – more style-conscious than Dempsey’s – and has attracted a younger crowd. The bar is dark and theatrical. The cocktails are the main draw.
Sheffield Pride
Sheffield Pride has grown into one of the more significant Pride events outside London and Manchester. It takes place across Endcliffe Park in the summer and draws a crowd that reflects the breadth of the city rather than just its LGBTQ+ community. The programming includes music, community stalls, and events that run across multiple days. It has the feel of something the city owns collectively.
Community Beyond the Venues
Sheffield’s LGBTQ+ community has strong roots in community organisations, university groups, arts organisations and sports clubs. The Crucible and Lyceum programme queer work regularly. The university societies are active and accessible to non-students at many events. The scene is healthier for being distributed rather than ghettoised.
